Nicholasville and the Kentucky River Palisades
The Kentucky River Palisades -- steep limestone gorges running roughly 100 miles along the river -- cut through Jessamine County's southern edge, where the river has eroded down through 450-million-year-old Ordovician limestone and dolostone to form the tall cliffs at High Bridge Park. The High Bridge itself, an 1877 cantilever railroad bridge rising 275 feet above the river, was the first major cantilever bridge built in the United States and still marks that dramatic river-cut terrain today.
