Storm Exposure on Midway's Low, Level Ground
Midway sits on the same low-relief Inner Bluegrass terrain that made it practical for the Lexington & Ohio Railroad to lay track through here in the early 1830s -- the line's first train reached this midpoint stop between Lexington and Frankfort in 1833, and the town R. C. Hewitt laid out in 1835 grew up flat against the rail line ever since, becoming the first Kentucky town established by a railroad when it was incorporated in 1846. That same low, level ground offers less natural slope to move heavy rain away quickly compared to towns set on more sloped terrain.
